Care type
What is after the hospital?
Post-hospital care is short-term care for someone recovering from a hospital stay — usually 5 to 30 days in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) or rehab community. It bridges the gap between hospital discharge and going home (or moving to assisted living). Medicare typically covers up to 100 days of skilled nursing if it's medically necessary after a qualifying hospital stay, though the first 20 days are fully covered and days 21–100 require a copay.
Who is after the hospital for?
Mom or Dad who's medically stable enough to leave the hospital but not steady enough to go straight home — usually after surgery, a fall, a stroke, or a serious infection.
How much does it cost?
Medicare often covers most or all of skilled nursing after a qualifying 3-day hospital stay. Private pay rates run $400–$700/day. Long-term care insurance may also cover.
